Teach the Way a Child Learns

One of the very common cause of concern for every parent is the education of their children. They begin to worry about their “studies” almost as soon as the child enters a school. Parents spend their precious time and money for their children’s education but still get this feeling that their child “does not study properly”.

The problem is not in the child for not showing an interest in his studies but the problem is that we as parents or teachers are not able to understand and identify his way of learning.

Every child is born with unique traits and learning abilities. Each child has his or her own preferences for learning environment also. Some children prefer studying alone in peace, while some others would prefer group study. Instead of pressurising a child to learn certain concepts in a particular manner, we must, at first, try to identify his learning style, preferences and abilities. A child should be taught not in a way that we know but in a way that he learns and understands.

What are these learning abilities?

Some children learn by way of listening and some by observing others. Some children learn by way of performing an activity, while some others learn by repeating the words they listened. Once we identify the learning style of our kids, I think half of the work is done because, when we know how the child will learn, we can easily adopt various methods of teaching a child. The role of a teacher is to facilitate a child in learning and not to enforce his style of teaching on the child.

Planning Activities

After getting to know the learning style of your child, we should try to change our teaching methodology as per the abilities of the child. We can try to plan activities for him. Activities can be planned in a way that should be according to the age group of your child and should be of interest to him. The concepts to be taught can be easily incorporated in these activities

How to identify a child’s learning abilities

Aviva India has come up with an online program to help parents in discovering the learning style of their children. It is called Kid-o-land. The program provides iCan, which is a proprietary assessment tool. It is developed with the help of psychometrics. This tool is designed for 7-9 years of children and helps parents identify their child’s inclinations, learning style and the preferred learning environment.

It has three sections in the test. I took the test myself for my daughter. After answering all the questions, it sends you the report of the test. Once, you get the report, you can go back to the platform where it provides you with various activities according to the learning style of your child. The activities are very helpful and can be done easily. They do not require much preparations and provides loads of learning too in a child friendly day.

Like it is said, “The sooner, the better”; we must try to identify our children’s learning abilities the sooner, for we can start planning for his future in a better way. For this, Aviva also offers tailor made child plans which can assist a parent to start planning for his future. With the help of tailor made activities and child plans, all I can say is no more worries about the studies and the future of our children. I have made my plans already, so what are you waiting for?

Deer Park: A Hidden Gem of Delhi

The festive season has started and my daughter’s school was closed for term end break. I wanted to take them to some new and different place that they have never been to. There are many new places that our city offers for kids, malls, play areas, gaming zones and theme parks. While we go there every now and then, I wanted to take them to some place which would delight them and offer them some kind of learning.

While searching for some fun places to go with kids, I came across Deer Park. Initially, I thought it to be a simple park which lies forgotten in the heart of the city like many other parks. I read more about it and got to know that there are some animals to see. I decided to explore the place with my kids.

We went there at about noon time, the weather has become pleasant now making it a good time to visit open areas. There are various enclosures in the park, one of them has rabbits and guinea pigs. Kids were so happy and excited to see rabbits and guinea pigs, they were not ready to move from there. A little ahead was another enclosure where there are large number of deer and peacocks. It was joy to see the kids jumping around like deer and peacocks, making the visit more joyful.

A big lake makes the place look more beautiful and peaceful, adding to the picturesque beauty of the place were various types of ducks. The place is very calm, serene and beautiful. Once inside, I could not believe for a while that I was in Delhi, given the fact that our city has become so crowded and polluted. It was a bliss to find myself there. The lush green gardens, animals roaming freely inside the huge enclosures, chirping of birds, chattering of monkeys, squirrels running here and there provides a treat for the eyes.

The place provides learning and entertaining experience to the visitors especially kids. The nature walk and exposure to sunlight is an advantage which the place offers to the urban kids who are more prone to staying indoors and becoming glued to the screens. The fresh air gives a boost to the lungs which have become used to inhaling the pollution of the city.

The walk in the lap of nature is very refreshing especially in such a place where there are deer, peacocks and rabbits around. The entry is also free and there is no time duration for the stay there. The place is open every day from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM during the summers till October and 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM during winter. So, if you are thinking of taking your kids to for a nature trail and making memories, Deer Park is sure to delight you.

Where is it located: Hauz Khas, Delhi.

The Glitz and Glam of Navratris in Delhi

Navratras are just around the corner and Delhi is all geared up to celebrate this much awaited festival with great grandeur and style. Delhi is at its shimmery best to fight the battle of good over evil and celebrate the nine avatars of Goddess Durga.

Navratras begin with “Kalasha sthapana”. It means installing a pot with holy water. The pot containing holy water is considered as the symbol of Goddess Durga. It is placed in the puja room and worshipped for nine days. On this day, barley seeds are sown as “khetri”. By the end of the navratras, these seeds grow into 3-5 inches long shoots. These are taken out and distributed as a form of blessing.

A very important aspect of Navratri celebrations is the fasting. Many people observe fast for the whole navratris but there are many who cannot fast for so many days. They observe fast as a couple. On the last day of the navratras, any two members of the house observe fast for one day.

Kirtans are organised on a daily basis in temples on a large scale. Ladies form groups or kirtan mandalis and perform kirtan and puja in their houses.

The evenings witness Ramleela. Sharad Navratras are synonymous with Ramleela which is organised at a very large scale in various parts of Delhi. Ramleela, is the theatrical performance of the story of Ramayana. The city’s highlights at this time are the Ramleela performance and the Diwali Melas organised at various parts of Delhi.

Alongwith, the Diwali melas and Ramleela which have always been very popular, another major event which has started gaining popularity is the Dandiya Nights.

The love for shimmer, music and dance has led to Dandiya nights getting popular in Delhi. The nine days of Navratris give Delhiites a reason to deck up in their most shimmering outfits and hit the dance floors with dandiyas in their hands.

The last day of the navratri is celebrated as “Kanjak” or “kanya pujan”. Kanjak is celebrated in temples as well as in houses. Young girls are invited in the houses, their feet are washed. A holy thread called “mouli” is tied on their wrists. Tilak is applied on their forehead. They are given puri halwa as a form of blessing.

Navratras are considered as highly auspicious days. It is believed that if you have to start anything new, may be a new business venture or buy a new vehicle, property or jewellery, then navratras are the best days to start. Navratras also mark the beginning of the wedding season in Delhi. All the wedding functions start with “Mata ki Chowki”, which is conducted during the navratras.

The markets are flooded with red chunaris, food items which are eaten during the navratris, things related to navaratri puja. Another thing, which is very famous is the “navratri special thalis” served in restaurants. The “navratri thalis” have become so famous that even those who are not fasting during these days opt for them during the Navratras.

Delhi looks at its best and sets the mood for the festive season beginning with navratras. All the new ventures which were put on hold and were waiting for the auspicious days, the weddings, functions, not to forget the shopping spree will all begin during the navratras. Delhi is going to be fully decked up and Delhiites will be seen glittering and sparkling.

Quinoa is included in one of the world’s healthiest food. It is also very good for children who are in the middle of growing phase.

So, what makes me write about this particular super food? Well, I was simply fascinated by it’s truly amazing health benefits especially for the kids. Here, are the nutrients that make quinoa a truly super food.

Fodder for Young Minds: The Child City Magazine

I remember, during my childhood, I used to dig myself in storybooks and children’s magazines. Nandan and Champak used to be my all-time favourites. Their comic strips, illustrations, stories and activities would keep me occupied for hours. Parents also, used to be happy to see us occupied in a constructive way. Their content used to be a parent’s delight too. Sometimes, during the weekends, my parents would get involved with me and do the activities provided in these magazines.

I have plenty of books for my kids, story books, picture books and board books to create their interest in reading. But I was missing that pleasure which I used to find in these monthly magazines. There was a certain curiosity and interest. We used to wait eagerly for the next issue of the magazine as soon as we finished one. I was looking for some good monthly magazine for my kids which could provide the same curiosity and interest to them.

Recently, I came across Child City Magazine, which is a digital magazine for kids. It is print friendly, which means we can give them a printed version any time we want. The child city magazine is a very thoughtful one. The content is curated taking care of all the details. The magazines provides food for young minds. Each and every section is interesting, informative and inspiring.

This year we witnessed the total solar eclipse. The Child City Magazine has incorporated a video coverage of this great event in their September issue. The video shows this majestic event in a beautiful way.

The magazine features a very interesting story for children “The Invisible King of the Jungle”. I enjoyed reading it as much as my kids. The Curious Club section features an interesting Trivia Byte giving young learners information regarding Escape Velocity in a very easy to understand manner.

The magazine also and Inspiration corner where it provides information about Teacher’s Day and Dr Radhakrishnan.

The magazine covers almost all the aspects. It has a section for current affairs, sports, riddles, jokes, vocabulary corner, sports and a lot more. My favourite part in the magazine is the last section where it gives a very interesting outdoor game for kids. Kids these days are spending more and more time in front of gadgets and lesser time plating outdoors. This last section of the magazine brings to them a very interesting game called “Kukumi” which they can play outdoors with their group of friends.

The magazine brings the kids very good content in a very interesting way. The pictures are very colourful and bright. Each and every page is beautifully created with pictures, colourful text and different fonts. So, if you are looking for information and entertainment for your kids, The Child City Magazine is the complete answer.

When those sparkling eyes turned myopic

This post was published on mycity4kids : https://www.mycity4kids.com/parenting/my-kids-my-wings/article/when-those-sparkling-eyes-turned-myopic

Yesterday , we went for our daughter’s vision test. It was her routine check up for eye sight. But she was scared. She was scared not of the Doctor or the procedures as this is her third year with her spectacles but of her number being decreased further. “Mom,  what if the number increases? Does it mean that my specs will be bigger or thicker? Will I look ugly will a big fat set of spectacles?” She said worriedly.
Two years back, when she was in class one, her teacher called me to meet her. She told me that my daughter hasn’t been paying attention in the class and wasn’t completing her work. I was worried. I asked my daughter at home why she was doing so. She told me that she wasn’t able to see the board clearly from her last seat. We thought of consulting a specialist and getting her eyes tested. She was having a poor vision due to myopia. I was stunned, thinking of my daughter having to wear glasses at such a young age. I love her sparkling brown eyes but the thought of seeing those eyes behind spectacles was like watching a caged bird.
What was her reaction? Well, initially she was excited as she thought her dad looked smart in his glasses. Happily she went to the optician and chose a pink frame for herself but when she wore them for the first time and learnt that she will have to wear them all the time then she got a reality check. She was soon in tears. “Mom, I don’t look like Barbie anymore. I don’t look beautiful. What would my friends say?”
Even I felt like crying. “Isn’t there anything that we can do to improve her vision.” I asked my husband. He started surfing the net and looking for something that we could do to improve her vision.
Then one day, he got a book titled, “How to Improve Your Child’s Vision Naturally” by Janet Goodrich. The book suggests emotional and psychological ways for healing myopia. There are various imaginative games and exercises to help your child recover their eyesight. Here are a few excerpts from the book that I would like to share:

1. The importance of healthy diet:-
We all know that a good balanced diet is extremely important, it is equally important for the eyes as well. “Proteins, vitamins and minerals compose the structure of living eyeballs. If an essential nutrient is missing or toxic substances are entering the body, developing vision can be affected. The brain processing input from the eyes and other senses, needs proper nutrition and plenty of oxygen.”
2. The role of oxygen:-
A good supply of oxygen to all our body parts is very important. Just as breathing exercises do tremendous good to our body, likewise it is important for our eyes and brain too. For that Janet suggests deep breathing, loud sighing and noisy yawning. According to her, “Your eyes give themselves a bath by yawning. Vision brightens up as if you had washed the world as well as your eyes.”
3. The benefits of sunlight:-
The light and warmth of sunlight provides tremendous benefits for our body and our eyes. “Sunlight is a natural antibiotic; it destroys certain bacteria, fungi and viruses… The sun’s warmth relaxes tight eye muscles.” It does not mean that one has to stare at the shining sun for long but one can sit in a shady area , keep the eyes closed and imagine it as a sunflower and imagining that there is a magical feather at the end of your nose. Draw an imaginary circle around it and rotate your head gently.
4. The saccadic motion of the eyes:-
Due to long hours of watching TV or engaging with other screens, the rapid flickering movement of eyes called saccadic motion is replaced with a stare which causes imperfect vision. To retrieve the saccadic motion, there is an exercise suggested in the book called “The Magic Nose Pencil”. Imagine that there is a magic pencil at the end of your nose, draw everything with your magic nose pencil, moving your head slightly. It is, as the book says, “our most important tool for breaking the stare and establishing or reestablishing a good habit of saccadic motion.”
5. Ball games:-
Another way of providing the saccadic motion to the eyes is playing with balls. Playing various indoor or outdoor games with different balls of different sizes provides fast flickering movements to the eyes. The movement of the balls itself produces saccadic motion of the eyes.
I have been reading and trying various methods and techniques suggested in the book in order to improve the eyesight of my daughter. Though she still wears spectacles but as parents we can only try whatever we can do to help her taking care of her eyes. The good news that we got in her eye check up yesterday was that her eye sight has been stable for the past two years.
I would like to request my readers to share their views and suggestions for helping our children in taking care of their eyes and vision.

The Dawn Of My Life

It’s always a pleasure to find oneself getting featured in a magazine. I feel honoured to have got a feature in a woman’s digital magazine called Womanza. I really feel glad that my story is helping others get some inspiration in life.

Read my stroy here: Womanza Stories

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “ I will try again tomorrow”.That’s the story of Vidhi Duggal…a beautiful woman who exemplifies beauty, talent and courage. Let’s hear an inspiring account from Vidhi who wants to tell every woman to believe in herself and be unstopable. So start where you are, use what you have and do what you can.

“Life offers many challenges and brings many phases. In every phase, the challenge is to adapt and shine in it. Life never remains the same. The journey of life is full of new twists and turns. The ups and downs of life changes us and we emerge as a new persona.

This is what happened with me. I grew up watching my mom working diligently in her salon. My eyes opened with the aroma of cosmetics and colours. I grew up only to develop a passion for cosmetics and the enthusiasm for haircuts and styles. A chance to attend a seminar by Sunsilk India where famous hairstylist of that time shared their expertise in this field fascinated me to become a hairstylist. The love for colours and creativity led me to pursue professional courses from the well-known institution Pivot Point India by Mrs Blossom Kochhar and Alps by Mrs Bharti Taneja. My nights were spent in dreaming about new makeup techniques and creating new hair styles. Education goes side by side; I did teachers training as back up for a career line.

Marriage brings in new zeal and enthusiasm, a new beginning, a new life. I found myself in the company of my beloved life partner, who has since been my pillar of strength.

I started working as a teacher for some time…and then my first baby was born in 2008. A delicate pearl in my arms made me a mother and to look after her was my first priority.  My dreams of becoming a makeup artist were still pushing me towards my salon. I gave up teaching profession and started working in my mom’s salon. I pursued my dreams and worked with all the passion and hard work. I started gaining recognition and could establish my name. This was the peak in my career.

Managing work and home is a big challenge in itself. The pressure to perform duties at home, looking after a child and long working hours at salon was making it difficult to manage . I took up teaching once again to cope up with household duties and taking care of my child. The evening during the wedding season were still spent in the salon since giving up one’s passion is not that easy.

After some time, I conceived for the second time. I was blessed with another daughter.

The biggest dilemma of life: To quit or not to quit!

I had to take the decision to quit my career. Motherhood became my priority, I gave up my profession to take care of my two daughters.

A New Beginning

I felt very low while sitting at home and performing household duties. The feeling of being not worthy any more started delving in me. Leaving one’s dream profession that too at the peak of it is not so easy. At one point in time, I was in a glamorous profession and another point in time I was at home doing ‘nothing’. The negative feelings were too strong and began to affect me. To deal with those negative feelings, I took up writing. What started as a medium to vent out my feelings soon gave me a fresh lease of life. I started blogging about my own personal experiences at MyCity4Kids and the reader’s response was commendable. My writing started generating good response and comments from my readers.

I have my own blog site vidhiduggal.wordpress.com

I have a new identity now and can see myself as a blogger.

My children are the centre of my universe. Even though, I had to give up my dreams, my successful career, and my salon which was extremely close to my heart had to be shut down forever, I still look forward in life. Giving up one’s career due to family duties is difficult but it is not the end of life. With social media gaining a stronger identity, new careers and new openings are coming up.

The dusk of three years is finally giving way to a new dawn in my life. Blogging is making me strong, independent and I have an identity of my own. Sharing my experiences of motherhood, stories from the life of others helps me connect with people and grow as a person.

I have learned that a dead end at the end of a road does not end the road there. Take a U turn and you will see that there are new ways and new openings. Be ready to embrace life and life will come to embrace you with new openings.”

Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

For centuries, vinegar has been known as a popular household item. It is used for various purposes. Apple cider vinegar is the most popular vinegar in this natural health community. Feel Better Tea

The second product which I got to try is the Feel Better Tea.

It’s not easy to become a mom. Acidity and low immunity makes motherhood more difficult. Feel Better Tea helps strengthen immunity and boosts stomach.

Key Ingredients

Feel Better Tea has some of the most awesome herbs in it. Its key ingredients are Nettle leaf, chamomile, mint and ginger.

Usage

The product must be used as per the given instructions. To prepare this herb tea, boil 200ml of water. Pour the boiled water onto a tea bag in a ceramic cup. Keep it covered for 10-15 minutes. Drink this tea daily between the meals to feel the benefits.

  1. The presence of Nettle in it helps purify blood and cures stomach upset. It is helpful for acne and skin eczema.
  2. Chamomile helps in calming the nervous system. It builds immunity and aids in digestion. It relaxes mind and promotes good sleep.
  3. Mint is known to boost immune system especially against cold and cough. It also helps reduce menstrual cramping.
  4. Ginger, as its one of the key ingredients, aids in digestion, reducing nausea and helps manage the imbalances in the gut and builds immunity.

Packaging

A box of Feel Better Tea comes with 30 infusion bags. It is priced at 599 INR. After using it myself and feeling the benefits of it, I find it completely worth its price.

My Views:

I used both the products for a week. Apple cider vinegar has sour taste but is okay when diluted in water. While its benefit for weight loss can be noticed only after 2-3 weeks, other benefits like whitening teeth and controlling bad breath and as a hair conditioner can be immediately seen.

I felt instantly refreshed after having Feel Better Tea. In this change of weather, it is really a very helpful product to fight off cold and coughs.
