Home hacks I swear by every monsoon

Monsoon is a beautiful season. It is poetic, romantic, dreamy and just lovely. However, it monsoon also means dampness, moisture, mud, and leaks. Muddy footprints in the house is an unavoidable issue. It also brings with it a lot of infections and mosquitoes. That’s why It becomes essential to take care of health, hygiene, and sanitation in and around the house.

Here are some tips which I follow every year to make my house ready before monsoons in order to prevent mosquitoes and diseases.

1. Timely repair of taps and pipes

I keep a check on all the pipes and get them repaired in time to avoid any water seepage or water accumulation at any place around the house. Also, the place where water purifiers are installed generally remains damp and moist. It is a must to keep it dry and clean during this season.

2. Dark areas

It becomes a must before the onset of monsoons to spot all the dark areas of the house and get them cleaned regularly. Areas that are underneath the sink especially become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and germs during this season. Every night I clean these places and spray mosquito repellents or a disinfectant liquid in this place.

3. Sewage

It is extremely important to de-clog the sewages regularly. Even if the sewage is not clogged, I put de-clog and drain cleaning powders regularly during monsoons. It prevents mosquitoes and cockroaches from entering the house.

4. Declutter is a must

It is very important to declutter and organise the house especially kitchen before monsoons. The unused items lying around the house often clutter the house and become the breeding ground of mosquitoes and spread infections.

Also, organise the house and kitchen in such a way that every member should be able to access the things easily.

5. Care for the closets

It is useful to put some neem leaves or cloves in the between the clothes in the cupboards to keep the silverfish at bay and keep them fresh.

6. Roll away those carpets

If you have carpets in the house, it is better to roll them away during monsoons. It is a very common sight to have wet feet and shoes in the house, carpets become damp with wet feet and do not dry easily during this season. It becomes difficult to maintain hygiene with carpets around during rains as they can house germs.

7. Keep an antiseptic liquid handy

It is important to keep hygiene essentials like antiseptic liquid and a liquid handwash at an easily accessible place and ensure that everyone uses it at least once after coming from outside and especially after getting caught in the rains. Cuts and bruises are not uncommon, so for that, I keep a bottle of antiseptic liquid handy since the chances of infections are very high in this season.

8. Checking the doors and windows

It is always better to keep the doors and windows tightly shut and see that the rainwater does not come inside from beneath the doors. For this, one can get a rubber strip fixed at the bottom of the door which would keep rainwater away.

9. Change and wash upholstery

I wash the curtains with Antiseptic liquid before the monsoons because these catch a lot of dust and do not dry easily during the rainy season. It is advisable to either change them and opt for light colours and wash them before the onset of monsoons to keep a check on mosquitoes.

10. Throw away unwanted shoes

Shoes if lying unused for some time, start catching fungus due to dampness. It is better to get rid of them before monsoons and clean and wash those which are being used regularly. Also, whenever possible keep them under the sun to ensure there is no moisture in them.

11. Regular cleaning of dustbins

It is always better to change the dustbins or clean and dry them properly. Also, if possible to use dustbin bags for proper disposal of garbage.

12. Door knobs and handles

I remember when my father was discharged from hospital last year, doctors especially advised us to clean the switchboards, door knobs and handles with a good surface cleaner like Dettol. These are touched by everybody especially the maids and have a lot of germs in them. To avoid the spread of germs in the house, it is important to clean them every day.

Super Healthy Recipe for the Super Speedy Recovery of a Sick Toddler

One of the cutest and adorable stage of childhood is the toddler stage. However, even the cutest toddler throws the most difficult tantrum to handle. It is at this stage that the children are developing food habits. They start showing up their likes and dislikes. Children become fussy eaters also. Children become fussy eaters also at this stage. The most difficult and dreaded part comes when they fall sick and refuse to eat anything.

I used to feel like pulling my hair and crying when they would fall ill and would not allow even a single bite to go down their tummies. A slight push and you will find yourself mopping the floor with all the food that had gone into the little tummies with so much struggle. The challenge is to be patient at this time.

Super Healthy Recipe for the Super Speedy Recovery of a Sick Toddler

After researching a lot, I found one super food that works like magic potion during such days and that is quinoa.
Quinoa is a super food and has many benefits. It is easily digestible and has many health benefits. It is tasty, crunchy and can be cooked in a variety of ways. Here are some of its benefits:
1. It is high in vitamin A, C, and E.
2. It is high in magnesium, potassium, and calcium.
3. It has 8 essential amino acids.
4. It is an excellent source of iron.
5. It is rich in protein.

Quinoa is a great option for parents who have a tough time feeding their kids with healthy food. It can be cooked like rice and served with curries and gravies.

A simple way of giving it to a toddler is in the form of khichdi.

Quinoa Khichdi
Ingredients:
¼ cup – quinoa
½ cup – moong dal
2 cup – water
Salt- to taste
¼ cup – finely chopped vegetables like peas, beans, carrots, cauliflower etc.
1 tbsp – Ghee
¼ tsp – turmeric
¼ tsp – cumin seeds

Method:
1. Rinse quinoa several times to remove its bitterness.
2. Rinse moong dal 3-4 times.
3. Soak quinoa and moong dal for 30 minutes.
4. In a pressure cooker, put ghee and let it heat.
5. Add cumin seeds, and let it splutter.
6. Add chopped vegetables and sauté them.
7. Add quinoa, moong dal and water. Add salt and turmeric.
8. Close the pressure cooker and allow it to whistle.
9. After about 1-2 whistles, remove from gas and allow it to cool.
10. Before serving, add a spoon full of ghee or butter.

I find this recipe especially useful when my kids fall ill and are unable to eat much. Quinoa khichdi is easy to chew and digest. With the benefits of quinoa, it helps in their speedy recovery also.

Be Your Daughter’s Best Confidante

 I still remember, when I was in school, my friends used to tell me how lucky I was to have parents with whom I could discuss and share everything. It used to really surprise me when they would tell me that the atmosphere in their homes was such that they could not say anything in front of their parents forget about confiding in them their secrets.

This never really happened with me. I have been blessed to have a family where I can share everything and feel secure of not being judged. My sister and my parents are my best pal and I have always openly discussed with them everything I want to.

Even in college, I used to feel this difference. My friends would come to the college dressed up in salwar suits, change their clothes in the washroom and go to watch movies with their friends. When I asked them why they did so, they would tell me that their parents would never permit them to wear western outfits or go for a movie with friends.

Till date, I feel that girls are not comfortable in doing things their own way. There are so many restrictions at home and so many do’s and don’ts that they have no option but to hide it from their parents. It later on creates problems for them.

Very often the decision of getting married is also forced upon them directly or indirectly. If they face any problems related to physical relationships, they do not have anyone to confide in. The choice of a lifestyle is not given to them. They have to face morality lessons from everyone.

Even after marriage, there are many instances where the girl is not happy in her marriage but keeps on adjusting because of the simple fact that her family will not support her otherwise. Parents would only ask her to adjust no matter what.

The lessons I learnt as a mother from these instances are:

1.   A girl should not feel hesitant to discuss her views on how and when she wants to get married. It’s okay if the parents want her to get married but it should not be forced upon her.

2.  If a girl is not happy in her marriage, the parents must understand the problems faced by her. She should also have the freedom of telling her parents about her relationship with the husband even if it is concerning her sexual life.

3.  In our culture, we never give importance to sexual life. It remains a subject which is never touched upon and nobody even peaks about it. When a girl gets married, it becomes a very important aspect of her married life and problems can crop up because of that. At that time, it becomes very important to have someone with whom such problems can be discussed.

4.  The freedom to choose their lifestyle is not given to girls. They must have this freedom to choose the kind of lifestyle they want to live or the kind of clothes they want to wear without being judged.

 

It is very important for parents to be their daughter’s best pal and have a relationship where they can share everything they feel like.

Academics play a great role in the development of a child. Right from the very beginning we try various methods of teaching concepts to our little ones. While for teaching toddlers and pre-schoolers, play way method and Montessori methods are the best, at the same time, we must not underestimate the role of worksheets in the teaching process.

When we are teaching a pre-schooler through play way method, it is also important to evaluate how much he has learnt. Worksheets help in evaluating the child’s learning of the concept.
2. Attention building
A child’s attention span is very less. But for a pre-schooler, it is important to gradually increase his attention span which is also important for learning academics. Worksheets help in building attention of a pre-schooler.
3. Better understanding
Worksheets are a fun way of providing an excellent understanding of different concepts. Worksheets provide an effective and enriching way of learning in less time.
4. Help the child learn to sit through for longer duration
Pre-schoolers are very active and love to run around and get involved in various activities. Stay at Home Mom vs. Working Mom: The Child Speaks

Last week, there was a Mother’s Day celebration in my daughter’s school. She was very excited since it was her first performance in her newly joined school. She asked me to come early and take the first seat, which would make it possible for her to see me. I reached her school in time and as instructed by her took a seat in the front row.
Children came in a row and my daughter quickly spotted me. She started beaming with joy and waving at me. They performed beautifully and in the middle of the performance too, my daughter was waving at me. After the performance, there were several fun activities to be performed by mom and child. All the while, my daughter was dancing here and there, jumping with delight telling everyone, how pretty her mother looks. She came to me, bowed in front of me and said, “Your majesty, you look so beautiful.”

Just then my eyes fell on a little girl who was sitting in a corner of the stage looking very sad. I went to her and asked her as to what happened and where was her mother.
She started weeping and said, “My mother did not come today. She has gone for her duty. She comes very late at night. Its mother’s day celebration today, I was performing for her but she did not come.”
I took her in my lap, she hugged me tight and started wailing even more. I tried my best consoling her and told her mom loves you and she will come soon. She kept repeating, “Mom is never with me, she comes very late at night. She leaves the house early every day.”
She kept sitting in my lap for some time till it was time for lunch. All the children happily sat down to eat their lunch but that girl was still sad. She sat alone, opened her lunch box had a bite or two and kept it back in her bag. She looked at other moms who were there for their kids with tears in her eyes. The sadness in her eyes, the way she looked at other moms with their kids was the heart-wrenching.
In the afternoon, when my elder one came back from school, she hugged me tight and said, “Mom, I got full marks in my English test and Hindi dictation. It is all because of you.”
The debate of going back to work after having kids will go on forever and whatever decision a mother takes is always the best for her child and her family. But I must say, this incident and the teary-eyed look of that little girl will stay in my heart forever.

5 Tips to Teach Kids About How to Save Water

We are celebrating Earth Day this week. Just as we have started realising the importance of conservation of our natural environment and taking various steps around it, it is equally important to make kids understand it also. Children are the future of this world. It is more important for them to learn and follow the steps towards saving their environment.
Water is the most important resource and kids love to play with water. However, in this natural tendency, they tend to waste a lot of water. It is important to take necessary steps around their playing with water which should ensure that there is minimum wastage and maximum enjoyment also.

Tips to save water for kids
1. Kids love to play while taking a bath. They love making bubbles and splashing water here and there. While giving kids a bath. Instead of giving them bath in a shower can use a tub filled with water. After bathing the child, the water can be used for washing toilets or flushing.
2. While brushing and washing their hands, they tend to leave the tap running for and play in water. We can make them understand that how it leads to wastage of water and instead keep a bucket full of water in the bathroom for washing their hands or brushing.

3. Children drink less water at a time. If we give them a glass full of water, they leave half of it. We can keep a tumbler or a separate bottle for them and encourage them to drink from it. If they leave water in a glass, encourage them to use that water for the plants.
4. A lot of water is discarded by RO water purifiers. We can collect that water and keep it in a bucket. Let kids use that water for watering the plants or flushing purposes.
5. Tell them about various ways of recycling or reusing water. While washing pulses and vegetables, we can show them that water can be collected in a separate utensil after washing the pulses and vegetables and can be used for various other washing or cleaning purposes.

Water is important for everyone and we need to save every drop of it. If we teach our kids about saving water right from the beginning, they develop the right habits to save every single drop of it.

Activities for Learning Patterns and Free Printable

Patterns are found everywhere around us. They bring order and regularity in our lives. You must have noticed how even a small child starts forming patterns and learns to put up random objects in a certain kind of pattern. For example, even a toddler quickly starts joining blocks and gives them a certain order. Kids find it too interesting to arrange utensils like bowls and spoons in a certain order or pattern. This is because it is our basic tendency to create an order or arrange the things out of unorderly things.

Why learning patterns is important for children?
Patterns are all around us, be it buildings, flowers, trees, bridges, floor tiles and so on. Patterns are taught as a part of maths, bet they are used in almost every subject. Even music and dance has patterns. Learning about patterns is an important part of future learning. They help in making predictions and generalizations. It is a basic maths skill. Patterns help us to create a balance and bring harmony in our everyday lives. They also help us in learning logic, sequencing and structure.

How to teach patterns to kids?
Patterns are not only easy to learn but interesting also. Recently, I did a few simple activities to teach pattern to my daughter. I used simple things like spoons, butter knives, forks, pens and pencils for this activity.

I arranged similar objects in simple pattern and asked her to put in the line which object comes next. We did this activity for a while taking various objects and changing the pattern. She enjoyed it a lot.

Also, the best way to teach pattern is take the kids outdoor and let them observe pattern in real life like zebra crossing, pattern on a tree, the arrangement of various pots and plants in the garden and so on.
Once, the child has learnt patterns and can create pattern on his own. You can give them worksheets or printable for practice.

Stay at home mom vs. working mom: Neighbourhood speaks

Being a woman is difficult. At every point in time, a woman has to take some really difficult decisions and make some really difficult choices. One of these major decisions is whether to continue one’s career or not after having kids. Sometimes the decision is entirely one’s own and sometimes it is circumstantial. Whatever it might be, but it’s really unfair to be judgemental and pass harsh comments without knowing about the real reason behind.
I was a working woman when my elder one was born and continued my work for a fairly long period. But after the birth of my second one, I gave up since it was difficult for me to create a fair balance. I don’t have any regrets now and neither I am going to dwell on it for past is past. What I am going to talk about is a really funny incident which happened to me recently.

I was visiting my mum this week and took my kids to a nearby park in the morning. While my kids were enjoying themselves on the swings, one of my mum’s old friends saw me and came to meet me. She greeted me smilingly and asked about my well being.
She continued and asked me, “So, what are you doing these days? Are you doing anything or simply sitting at home doing nothing? Why did you give up your profession despite being so qualified? You are wasting your education and all the money your parents spent on your education.” She then continued by saying, “you must learn from our mistakes. I was a teacher but left my job for my kids and now the same kids ask me that why you did not do anything. You know even your own kids consider you worthless if you are not working. It is extremely important for a woman to work for it develops the mind.”

She went on and on giving me this very valuable piece of advice while I kept questioning her remarks in my mind.
This is extremely a strange how people perceive a stay at home mother as. First of all, it is considered as a waste of education and qualification along with the ‘money’ that parents’ spend on educating their daughters. Does it really so? Does education ever gets wasted? That means we should not be educating our daughters because if they choose to stay at home after having kids, the ‘money’ and the ‘degrees’ will get wasted.
Secondly, a woman who is not ‘working’ as in the professional terms or has a job outside the house is doing ‘nothing’ and sitting idle all day long. Hmm!
Is that so? Then who is managing the house, taking care of kids, their health, education, co-curricular activities, so on and so forth?

Third, a job is necessary for the development of mind. Okay! I definitely never knew that!
Last but not the least, since the conversation was pretty long, “kids consider a stay at home mom as worthless or do not value her.” Again, a point of disagreement there. If a woman is educated and strong, nobody can dare to consider her worthless. For when she values herself strongly, people’s reaction doesn’t matter and she definitely knows how to handle her kids.
My point is that I have been a working mom as well as a stay at home. I do think that to take a decision in either way is tough. But in the end, she knows what will work best for her family and if she decides, either way, she must be respected and supported by it.

Time for You, Too: Self-Care Tips and Advice for New Parents

Caring for a newborn is an all-encompassing responsibility that leaves little time for anything else, making it extremely hard to find time for yourself. And yet, as a new parent, your ability to provide adequate care depends in large part on your health and emotional state. That’s why self-care is so important. If you’re breastfeeding, getting enough sleep and time for yourself helps with milk production, keeps up your energy level, and helps you better cope with depression. When you’re a busy new parent, self-care needs to be a concerted effort. There won’t be many opportunities to go for a long walk, take a restful and undisturbed nap, or read a book. Remember, if you don’t make time, there will never be time.

When it comes to self-care, sleep should be your first priority. It helps keep your immune system strong and makes it possible to keep up with those 3 a.m. feedings. Finding the time to get regular sleep is key, so figure out a way to schedule time for sleep based on your baby’s rhythms and tendencies. Try not to think of sleep as something you can continue to do for seven to eight hours at a time. For new mothers, it’s more realistic to get two or three hours here and there throughout the day when your baby’s sleeping, or when your partner can take over for a while. You’ll feel more refreshed than if you work in a long stretch every couple of days, and little else in between.

Find a confidant

New moms need someone to share experiences and frustrations with, someone who can provide advice and moral support when you hit a rough patch. You can usually find a community of new mothers to share with at a local baby store, or a website such as Meet Up. No one understands what you’re going through quite like another new mom.

Time off

Every new mom needs a little “me” time to recharge her mental batteries and process the experience of motherhood. There won’t be time for much self-indulgence in the first few weeks after giving birth, so find time to get away with friends, relax at a local bookstore, or get some “retail therapy” once you and your baby have established your sleep and feeding patterns. Make an arrangement with your husband, or ask a family member to babysit now and then so you can do some meaningful unwinding.

Do what you do

A major part of self-care is making time to do things and go places that make you happy. That could mean attending a yoga class, meeting friends for coffee (decaf, of course), or taking a stroll in your favorite park. Some new moms spend time meditating to restore a sense of inner peace and relieve some of the stress that often comes with motherhood. It’s important to deal with stress in positive, healthful ways rather than turning to an addictive substance, especially if you’re still breastfeeding. Try different approaches for finding the time: Get up earlier in the morning, or arrange things so that you can take the night off once a week.

Get moving

The emotional and physical benefits of getting exercise every day are well-known. Health care professionals recommend getting 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Obviously, that won’t be possible in the first few weeks after giving birth. When you’re physically ready, try going for a walk on your lunch break, climb stairs instead of taking the elevator, ride a stationary bike, or do some resistance exercises at home when you have the time.

There’s nothing wrong with taking care of yourself once you’ve given birth. In fact, it’s important for you and your newborn. Don’t feel guilty about asking for help or setting aside some time just for yourself.

Babies, especially infants, are really good at a few things during their first stage of life: sleeping, eating: and making a complete mess in their diapers. Some parents have a little difficult with the last one, especially if they have not changed a diaper before.

1. Set up your station

The last thing you want is to be hands deep in a messy diaper change and realize that you left your diapers, or diaper cream downstairs. Before you get started make sure that all of your necessities are easily within arms reach. Every diaper station should have plenty of diapers, wipes, and diaper-rash cream easily within reach.

Diaper changing supplies:

·         Wash cloth or wipes

·         Disposable or cloth diapers

·         Rash cream

·         Bag for soiled items

·         Set of extra clothes (just in case)

2. Make sure your baby is safe

Before you get into the actual diaper changing, you want to ensure that your baby is in a
safe place. This is especially true if they are high up, such as on a changing table, a bed, or a couch. If straps are available, use them. Even your newborn who can’t roll yet can stretch and fall of the surface. Don’t just rely on these straps, keep a constant eye on your baby to ensure that they are safe.

3. Distract your baby

You probably don’t need anyone to tell you the babies are antsy. Especially when you need them to lie still for a diaper change. In order to set yourself up for a smooth diaper changing experience, have something in mind to
keep him or her occupied. Play peek-a-boo, place a mobile over the changing table, sing songs, shake a rattle. This will help your little stay focused on something other than the fact you are changing their and prevent wiggling mid-change.

Once your set up, you’re ready to get down to business! Here’s how you’ll tackle the diaper change:

1.      Once you’re set up, put the baby on your designated changed surface

2.      Make sure you have the new diaper and a few wipes ready before you remove any clothing and diaper

3.      Open the buttons on your child’s outfit or remove the pants to check if any diaper contents have spilled into the clothing. Focus on removing this mess first.

4.      If the diaper only contains urine, gently clean the baby’s parts.

5.      If the diaper is soiled gently use remove any excrement with the diaperas you fold it up under the baby.

6.      Use a wipe to clean from front to back. Make sure you check and clean under all of the folds of your baby’s skin. This may take several wipes.

7.      Once the baby is clean, use diaper rash cream where necessary and put on a clean diaper.
